Frito-Lay brand Walkers Crisps converted London bus shelters into vending machines that gave passersby a free bag of chips in exchange for sending out tweets.
In a UK first for out-of-home advertising, three Twitter-activated digital vending machines were placed at bus shelters in Oxford Street and Clapham Junction.
The stunt was created by OMD UK, AMV BBDO, Talon and Clear Channel, as part of the brand’s ongoing “Do Us A Flavour” campaign. A humorous advert featuring Walkers ambassador and soccer star Gary Lineker was filmed by AMV BBDO, which appeared to show him sitting inside the bus shelter vending machines.
Passersby were encouraged to “tweet to eat” by sending a message to ‘@Walkers_busstop’. Lineker would then seemingly respond by dispensing a free pack of the ‘Do Us A Flavour’ finalist chips. These six flavours, created by members of the public and selected by a judging panel, are: Sizzling Steak Fajita, Chip Shop Chicken Curry, Pulled Pork in a Sticky BBQ Sauce, Ranch Raccoon, Cheesy Beans on Toast, and Hot Dog with Tomato Ketchup.
