Foxtel Group has paid tribute to actor Sam Neill following his death at the age of 78, describing him as a “true pioneer of Australian screen” whose impact on film and television would be felt for generations.
Neill, the New Zealand-born actor best known internationally for his role as Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, died surrounded by family.
Neill had revealed in April that he was cancer free after undergoing treatment for blood cancer over the past five years.
In a statement, Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany reflected on Neill’s long-standing relationship with the company.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sam Neill, a true pioneer of Australian screen whose extraordinary contribution to cinema and television has left an indelible mark on our industry,” Delany said.
“Sam was a long-time friend of the Foxtel Group, first as a FOXTEL ambassador and, more recently, leading the cast across three seasons of the BINGE Original series The Twelve. His immense talent, generosity and contribution to our screens will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of working with him.”
Delany extended his condolences to Neill’s loved ones and the many people who worked alongside him throughout his career.
“Our thoughts are with Sam’s family, friends and colleagues, including the many cast and crew who worked alongside him over the years, at this very difficult time.”
A statement from his family on social media read: “Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the family said.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Beyond his acclaimed film career, Neill remained a familiar face on Australian screens, starring in Foxtel’s BINGE Original legal drama The Twelve, where he led the cast across three seasons. His decades-long career spanned film, television and theatre, earning him recognition as one of Australasia’s most celebrated actors.
