If there was a theme out of this year’s Super Bowl ads it had to be nostalgia. Jeep reprising the classic 1993 film Groundhog Day, Cheetos celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mc Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This, Mountain Dew’s Shining and iconic 80s actor, Molly Ringwald, flogging Mexican avocados to name just a few.
And continuing with all things nostalgic comes the latest work from Domino’s in the US.
Put it down to agency ECDs reminiscing about their youths or they’ve simply run out of ideas, Domino’s latest reprises the classic Tom Cruise dance scene – set to Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock ‘N Roll – from his breakout 1983 film Risky Business.
The spot’s the work of creative agency Crispin Porter Bogusky and flogs Domino’s’ GPS pizza delivery alert.
Interestingly, Domino’s didn’t advertise during the Super Bowl, but seemed to capture the zeitgeist anyway with the number of brands reprising old movies. And, in doing so, saving itself the $US5.6 million price tag for a 30-second Super Bowl spot.
To the ad’s credit, the dance moves are uncannily spot on; however, B&T’s not entirely sure how many of Domino’s’ customers – the under 25s – would be familiar with a film that’s from their parent’s generation. Or, maybe that’s the point. Check out the fun below:
