Deakin University has launched The ATAR Mood Machine, a site that aims to cut through the noise during the stressful Change of Preference, period when year 12 students receive their results.

Created by Hardhat Digital, the fully responsive site asks students to pick their mood (devo, super happy etc), select a related animated GIF, add text and share with friends on social channels with prizes being awarded daily.

The site, though simple in its mechanic, displays Deakin’s understanding and empathy for future students, providing them with an outlet to express themselves through the use of pop culture references and the much loved GIF.

Presented by the Social Media Command and Innovation Centre at Deakin, the site is integrated with social channels and showcases the university’s  commitment to technology in a fun, engaging way.

Deakin’s Head of Social Media, Gabriella Francis said: “Deakin understands that Change of Preference (COP) week can be an emotional period for Year 12 school leavers. Our on-going approach to connect with students online has brought on the creation of The ATAR Mood Machine. This light-hearted competition encourages school leavers to express themselves with a GIF in the lead up to COP week, for their chance to win a daily prize and find out more information on Change of Preference.”

Lee-at Jacobson, account director at Hardhat Digital said: “We know that this is a really stressful period for students, so rather than throw another “Pick Me” campaign at them, we decided to take the ‘mate on the couch’ approach providing them with a place to express themselves through animated GIFs and incentivised through great daily prizes. This is just another example of Deakin being willing to sit outside the comfort zone and do something a bit different.”

The ATAR Mood Machine will run from December 8 to 12.
