Australian tennis legend Margaret Molesworth is being celebrated on The Australian Open’s commemorative coin for the 100th anniversary of the women’s championship.

ANZ has unveiled a giant replica of the Australian Open 2022 Commemorative Coin featuring former professional Australian tennis player Margaret Molesworth, who was the first Australian woman tennis player to be listed in the world’s top ten rankings.

In recognition of his final Australian Open and astounding career, ANZ Ambassador and Golden Slam wheelchair tennis champion, Dylan Alcott OAM, announced the Australian Open 2022 Commemorative Coin at Birrarung Marr by unveiling a giant replica of the coin featuring Margret Molesworth (18 October 1894 – 9 July 1985).

Margaret Molesworth won the inaugural Australasian Championships women’s singles title 100 years ago in 1922 and successfully defended her title the following year. After retiring from competitive tennis, Margaret Molesworth became one of the first female professional coaches in Australia.

Celebrating 100 years of women competing at the Championships, the commemorative coin acknowledges Molesworth as the inaugural winner of the Women’s Singles Australasian Championship title. Returning to defend her title in 1923, Molesworth was a champion and pioneer of her time, recognised as one of Australia’s first professional female tennis coaches.

The commemorative coins are tossed at the start of each main arena match by the ANZ Coin Crew, comprised of more than 150 ANZ Tennis Hot Shot participants, who will be gifted the limited edition coin to remind them of the once in a lifetime experience.

Lucky participants of the ANZ Coin Crew were at the unveiling on Sunday to work on their coin-tossing skills and prepare for the main arenas at the Australian Open 2022.

ANZ, managing director of retail banking, Katherine Bray, said: “We are excited to be unveiling the ANZ 2022 Commemorative Coin and recognising the incredible achievements of Australian women’s tennis legend, Margaret Molesworth.

“This year marks the 100th anniversary of the women’s  championship and we are proud to be celebrating Margaret’s tennis legacy.”

“ANZ also looks forward to cheering Dylan Alcott on as he competes in his final Australian Open and we send him our best wishes in his next chapter after a truly exceptional tennis career,” said Bray.
