It’s been an interesting year for Australian celebrities and influences, but new data from HypeAuditor reveals cricketer David Warner gained the most Instagram fans this year while Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery lost over half a million followers.

New data released from HypeAuditor, the AI analytics platform for brands seeking fair, transparent and effective influencer marketing, has captured gains and losses in follower numbers across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Cricket star David Warner hit it for six with his Instagram following, gaining a whopping 2,597,893 followers this year.

This is scores ahead of the next influencer, Formula One racing champion Daniel Ricciardo, who gained just under 2 million followers.

Other appearances in the Top 10 of gained followers on Instagram include actor Phoebe Tonkin, fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow and T20 Adelaide Strikers’ bowler Rashid Khan.

On the other end of the scale, Australian actor Dacre Montgomery, best known for his role as Billy Hargrove in Netflix’s Stranger Things, lost 554,763 followers, followed by Jefo, the Australian artist known for his K-pop dancing and singing, who lost 408,000 followers this year.

On TikTok, ShortestBlockbusters was the fastest-growing account of the year, gaining almost 10 million new followers.

Over on YouTube, Cricket Australia gained some 1.5 million followers, more than any other brand or individual.

“It’s certainly been a big year for cricket in Australia, with many individual players, teams, and playing bodies popping up in the most gained followers categories across Instagram and YouTube,” says Alexander Frolov, CEO and co-founder of HypeAuditor.

“Whether a coincidence or a concerted digital marketing effort is behind it, Australian cricketers were dominant across the influencer space this year.”

“A series of much-talked-about scandals and triumphs, combined with the highly anticipated summer of cricket ahead, has cemented the success of the sport in the social media space.”
