Google has revealed Australia’s Year in Search, detailing what Aussies have been looking for answers and more information on this year.
And, this year, we were all looking to kill time at work with Wordle being the number one searched term in the country. The New York Times-owned game took the world by storm this year, with people regularly sharing their results online to derision and acclaim, alike.
Aside from brain teasers, Aussies have also been searching for the Australian Open, World Cup, Shane Warne, and Ukraine this year.
“2022 was a year of great change and new beginnings – a new government, a new monarch and a new phase of the pandemic. As Aussies grappled with extreme weather and world events, we looked for answers and to make sense of the world. We showed our care for Ukraine, followed the floods and questioned the price of lettuce,” wrote Camilla Ibrahim, Google’s search trends comms manager in a blog post.
“And while we faced some tough times, we found fascination and fun through games, sport, craft and cooking. We cheered on Ash Barty, craved dahl, made pom poms… and searched for Wordle more than anything else.”
Australia recorded more searches than ever before for “rain,” “flood,” “La Niña,” and “mould,” and was the top searching country for “floods” and “La Niña.”
What’s more “When will the rain stop?” was searched more than ever in Australia this and Australia was the top country in the world searching for the question this year. Search interest in floods in Australia quadrupled compared to last year and search interest in La Niña increased by 80 per cent.
