Apple To Ramp Up Spotify Rivalry With Hollywood Play

Apple To Ramp Up Spotify Rivalry With Hollywood Play

Apple has set its sights on Hollywood to counteract slowing sales of iPhones and iPads, with plans to build a new business around distributing original TV shows and movies.

According to The Wall Street Journal, sources said the original content would be available to subscribers of Apple’s music streaming service, which already offers a limited number of documentary-style programs on musos.

The sources said the tech behemoth has been chatting to producers over the last few months about buying rights to scripted TV programs, and has reached out to marketers from networks and studios to discuss promotional arrangements.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is also looking into distributing movies, according to sources, and is aiming to offer original scripted content by the end of the year.

This new business venture by Apple would give the company a big point of difference against its music streaming rival Spotify, but it doesn’t appear that it is gearing up to spend enough to directly compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or pay TV networks, The Wall Street Journal noted.
