The Australian Influencer Marketing Council (AiMCO) has released its new Talent Agency Checklist for creators, an industry information sheet for the national influencer marketing sector.
The checklist, developed by AiMCO’s Creator Advisory Council and the Talent Managers Working Group, has been created for Australian creators and influencers looking to sign with a talent agency for representation.
Available exclusively to AiMCO members, the checklist aims to help creators ask the right questions during negotiations with talent agencies, while also brokering appropriate remuneration and career support.
The checklist includes advice about common issues to consider before signing a contract, including knowing your goals and the type of brands you want to work with, along with questions to ask the talent agency, including day-to-day contacts, onboarding processes, and other clients in their stable.
It also includes questions to consider about opportunities, encouraging creators to request examples of recent campaigns and ask about professional development and wellbeing support, along with information about contracts, particularly around fees, invoicing, exclusivity and termination.
The checklist also contains a list of “red flags” for creators to consider during negotiations, noting pressure to sign, a lack of clear commission or payment processes, and refusal to provide full copies of contracts as potential warning signs.
“A talent agency checklist was one of the first items on our to-do list as a committee, as it is well overdue for the nation’s growing creator scene,” AiMCO Creator Advisory Council member and CEO of Spawnpoint Media, Jordan Barclay said.
“As the influencer marketing industry has evolved, so has the ability for creators to monetise content. This rapid growth has seen many content creators go from video hobbyists to full-time influencers with brand partnerships, responsible for navigating their own deals and fees. Many are at the stage where they’re considering signing with a talent agency to help manage their deals, but they don’t know what to ask when they go into negotiations,” he added.
“This checklist is designed to ensure creators are entering fair and beneficial agreements, particularly regarding contracts, fees and industry connections. Navigating the legal aspects of deals, understanding potential pitfalls and leveraging industry relationships are crucial for creators to protect their interests and maximise their opportunities. AiMCO developed this checklist as part of its mission to assist and grow the creator community, and it will be a go-to for any creator assessing if management is the appropriate pathway for them”.
AiMCO’s membership continues to grow, with recent additions including creators Chloe Morello, Steph Cooks, Matt Fahd and Vanessa Li.
The organisation has also released a tax guide for influencers and content creators, along with salary benchmarking guidelines, providing salary expectations for various roles within the influencer industry, with more guides in the pipeline.
