ABC Sydney’s beloved Mornings host Sarah Macdonald has revealed on air that her time at the broadcaster is coming to an end, with her contract not being renewed for next year.
“Well, here’s the news from me in terms of disappointment,” Macdonald shared with listeners.
“Listen, I’m not going to be on the radio with you next year. The ABC has decided not to renew my contract here at Mornings.”
Taking the news in stride, Macdonald highlighted her many achievements with pride.
“I am proud of what I’ve done. The ratings are up. I’ve broken lots of stories. Had the first interview with the new governor-general. I got the Premier of New South Wales to regularly take your calls. Led the election coverage, led the move to our Parramatta studios”.
The decision to move Macdonald on has caught many by surprise, especially given her strong ratings and loyal listener base.
Media Watch host Paul Barry summed up the general mood of disbelief, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “I can’t believe this. I’m hearing that #ABC has dumped Sarah Macdonald from ABC Sydney. IMHO she’s brilliant, one of the best things on radio. WTAF?”
Sarah Macdonald began her career with a cadetship at ABC Radio News before becoming triple j’s political correspondent in Canberra. She later hosted triple j’s arts program Creatures of the Spotlight and the Morning Show.
Expanding into television, she worked on programs like Recovery, Race Around the World, and Two Shot.
Macdonald’s exit comes on the same day ABC unveiled its 2025 content slate, which includes the highly anticipated return of veteran broadcaster Fran Kelly to Radio National.
While it’s the end of one chapter for Macdonald, her impressive legacy at Mornings won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
