-196 Turns Sydney Nightclub Into Tokyo Konbini For 1 Night Via Noisy & PHD

Youth culture agency noisy, alongside media agency PHD, turned Carousel Nightclub on Oxford Street into a Japanese convenience store for -196 last Thursday, and 5,000 people tried for the 750 free tickets.

The allocation was gone in under five minutes, the venue hit capacity within 30 minutes of doors, and a queue of around 500 held outside until close.

The free pop-up for -196 (pronounced minus one-nine-six), the Japanese vodka RTD that has sat in konbini fridges since 2005, came out of noisy’s ideas lab, which handled concept, artist booking, venue design, production, ticketing and media.

All 2,500 registrations went through noisy’s own platforms, LINES, Whatslively and Mixmag ANZ.

The brief was to bring the end-of-the-night konbini ritual to Sydney rather than describe it. Walk in and Carousel was gone. In its place: stocked shelves, fluorescent aisles, floor-to-ceiling neon, a custom photo booth and seven real fridges packed with -196 and 180kg of fresh fruit, a nod to the brand’s Freeze Crush Infusion process. Once the doors closed, the fruit went to OzHarvest.

noisy booked Club Angel to headline from inside the shop. The Gadigal Land/Sydney DJ and producer, coming off a sold-out ‘Til Death national tour and a year that took him from EDC Las Vegas to Extrema Outdoor, flew back to Australia to play it. Tasman, Bella Bella and Deens supported.

Content ran across noisy’s owned and partnered network, with PR, influencer and creator activity on top, so the whole thing was organised, ticketed, promoted and covered without leaving noisy’s network. The bigger number came the morning after: hundreds of clips tagging -196.

That is how noisy works. An ideas lab that makes the moment, owned media that fills it, and a live experience that puts a brand inside the night.

Harry Wilson, managing director of noisy, said: “Australia is close to capacity with brand-led pop-ups, but they still work when they’re done well. Young people have the appetite to be sold to. If it’s a logo placement in a music event, think again. So we built a place they actually wanted to end their night, and put it on the platforms they already use to decide where to go. 5,000 people going for 750 tickets on a Thursday tells you Sydney nightlife isn’t dead, it just moved to whoever is putting on the best night. Our ideas lab created it and the noisy team delivered it end to end. We know the formula, and this proved it again.”

It follows a series of noisy activations across nightlife, community and music, including UP&GO’s sunrise run with The Sydney Run Club and Vaseline’s takeover of Maple Social Club’s Coffee & DJs. The agency is now expanding into the UK, where LINES is live in London alongside BeFesti and Break The Wire.

Gilbert Lee, group planning director at PHD added: “Building a meaningful brand is harder than ever. To genuinely connect with audiences, every touchpoint must be treated as either a first impression or an opportunity to deepen a relationship. That’s why bringing the authentic Japanese spirit of -196 to life with noisy showed us firsthand the power of cultural relevance and genuine experiences. The campaign demonstrated that when media, culture, innovation, and experience work together, brands can move beyond awareness and create genuine participation and connection.”
