If you were heading toward the Shire this weekend, you might have noticed a bit of a change at Sans Souci’s KFC store. The huge KFC bucket that presides over Rocky Point Road has undergone a bit of a makeover, being flipped upside down.
The mystery took the internet by storm with a video posted to TikTok by Sydney-based foodie, @mishytales, sparking debate over whether the flip was a nod to Australia’s Ashes campaign hitting off over the weekend, or if it was a subtle tease of a partnership with Netflix ahead of the upcoming final season of Stranger Things.

It wasn’t just the towering bucket that underwent a flip. The brand’s logo on social media platforms also underwent a bit of a makeover, appearing upside down.
The KFC app also did a bit of a flip, with the iconic bucket logo appearing upside down on phones across the country.
So what is the mystery behind the big flip? A spokesperson for KFC confirmed that eagle eyes Stranger Things fans were right to assume a collab was at hand.
The brand revealed today that it has teamed up to launch a fully functioning fried-chicken diner hidden beneath Sydney—complete with ’80s music, retro arcade machines, and a new burger straight out of an alternate dimension.
Timed to the highly anticipated final season of the hit Netflix series arriving this November, the company has introduced the world’s first underground KFC, fittingly titled Hawkins Fried Chicken, tucked away in the disused tunnels beneath Wynyard Station.
“We’ve loved seeing the buzz and detective work from our fans, spotting the flipped KFC app logo and the curious upside down bucket at our Sans Souci restaurant,” a spokesperson for the brand said.
“We can confirm that KFC has been dropping these mysterious hints, offering fans a little taste of what’s been coming… something truly out of this world, straight from the Upside Down. As part of our exciting partnership with Netflix for Stranger Things, we’re thrilled to announce today the opening of Hawkins Fried Chicken, popping up in Sydney’s abandoned Wynyard Tunnels this Friday and Saturday, alongside our brand new Upside Down Double launching nationwide from December 2nd”.
