Sportsbet gave racegoers at the Sportsbet Caulfield Guineas the chance to win a share in $100,000 by recreating John Aloisi’s unforgettable 2005 penalty at a trackside Kick for Cash activation at Caulfield Racecourse.
Marking almost 20 years since the iconic spot-kick against Uruguay that sealed Australia’s place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Aloisi was on hand to meet fans and witness attempts first-hand. Successful participants across Guineas Day and Sportsbet Caulfield Cup Day split the $100,000 prize pool.
The celebration also featured a celebrity penalty challenge, with UFC star Alexander Volkanovski joining AFL and AFLW talent Nick Watson, Jack Higgins, Tom Barrass, Ruby Schleicher and Sarah Rowe to test their technique in front of a packed crowd.
“Two decades on, that night in 2005 remains unforgettable. I’m grateful to Sportsbet for bringing the moment back to life and sharing it with everyone here,” said Australian Socceroos legend John Aloisi.
“With the World Cup on the horizon, I can’t wait to see how the next golden generation of Socceroos performs, and today is a great way to build momentum for what promises to be an exciting period for Australian football.”
“Sportsbet is always looking to innovate through our partnership with the Melbourne Racing Club, and with the 2026 World Cup not far away this was the perfect moment to bring football to Caulfield,” commented Yuta Kobayashi, head of brand, advertising, and PR at Sportsbet.
“It was fantastic to have John Aloisi join the roster of global sporting icons we’ve hosted here, including Rob Gronkowski, Scottie Pippen and Alexander ‘Volk’ Volkanovski.”
“Our Kick for Cash activation is one of our biggest yet at 12 metres high, and fans will have another chance at Sportsbet Caulfield Cup to win a share of $100,000.”
