Finals footy continues to reign supreme in TV land with the NRL preliminary finals smashing the block out of the water with a total TV national reach of 3,113,000 and a national average of 1,764,000.
With all eyes on the much-awaited match-up between Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers, the pair put on an absolute masterclass. With Penrith coming off four straight premiership wins and the Broncos not having won a grand final since 2006, the stage was set for an epic match-up, and the result did not disappoint.
With the Broncos down 14-0 at halftime, it seemed like another Penrith premiership was all but a forgone conclusion, but, fresh off a halftime locker room spray, the Broncos came into the second half with a reignited fire. The boys from Penrith fought a good fight, but Brisbane was just too good, tying it up at 14 all. A conversion from skipper Adam Reynolds took it to 16-14 with just a few minutes left and ultimately secured the Broncos a spot in the grand final next weekend.
The Block, in comparison, hit a total of 2,808,000 with an average of 1,632,000 – no small feat for a program that seemingly airs near constantly, but not quite enough to get it the win for the night.
9News was the number one most-watched program, with the NRL taking out top spot among the non-news programs.
With a huge grand final match-up between the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm slated for this long weekend, and fans mostly just desperate to see someone other than Penrith win, Nine can expect another massive weekend of footy dominance ahead.
