Seeing is believing. Well…it used to be.

If you’ve opened up TikTok, Shorts, Stories, or Reels recently no doubt you’ve come across a flood of frighteningly realistic AI videos powered by OpenAI’s Sora platform. These videos don’t just make you double take but double guess your concept of reality itself.

In this week’s episode of Overnight Experts Chris Colter and Sam Geer explore the rise of “deepfakes”–a world where AI doesn’t just imitate reality, it manufactures it. From Hollywood face swaps to political misinformation, synthetic media is reshaping the boundaries between truth, performance and persuasion.

Since the pair recorded this ep (it’s been in the can for a while) seen the sophistication and availability of these models has increased exponentially. What started as playful internet experiments has evolved into a global industry of generative trickery—where anyone with a laptop can conjure a celebrity confession, a fake CEO statement or a hyper-real brand ad that never actually happened.

As this technology continues to advance faster than its safeguards, it raises some urgent questions about consent, authenticity and the future of trust itself.
