Craft beer brand Panhead has rolled out a major brand refresh and packaging redesign created by independent brand design agency Weave, as the New Zealand brewery looks to strengthen its premium positioning and support future growth.
The redesign introduces a new strategic platform, “Beer, Engineered”, repositioning Panhead’s garage-built heritage around precision, quality and craftsmanship while creating a brand system that extends beyond packaging into communications, retail experiences and future product innovation.
The project follows Lion’s decision to review Panhead’s positioning amid increasing competition in the craft beer market, appointing Weave to refresh the brand strategy, identity and packaging portfolio.
WThe updated identity retains Panhead’s most recognisable visual assets while modernising them through a refined wordmark, a redrawn winged pint icon, updated typography and a refreshed colour system. The packaging now features a predominantly black can design intended to improve shelf standout and brand recognition, while the brewery’s Hazy range receives a distinctive gradient treatment to aid navigation across the portfolio.
Dan Cookson, executive creative director at Weave, said the project focused on building on Panhead’s existing strengths rather than starting from scratch.
“Panhead already had enormous brand equity. Our role was to sharpen what made the brand distinctive, creating a brand system that’s more confident, more consistent and better aligned with the way Panhead thinks, builds and brews,” Cookson said.
“Beer, Engineered gives Panhead a strategic platform that can extend well beyond packaging while staying true to the grit and ingenuity that made the brand iconic.”
Kristin Paddy, senior brand manager at Panhead, said the refresh reflected both the evolution of the craft beer category and the maturity of the brand.
“Panhead has earned its place as New Zealand’s leading luxury craft beer brand through the quality of its beer and the strength of its personality. This evolution strengthens those equities, creating a more premium, cohesive brand experience that will help drive recognition and growth for years to come,” Paddy said.
“The new brand system has been designed to improve navigation across the portfolio, strengthen shelf recognition and support premium pricing in an increasingly crowded craft beer category.”
Panhead’s refreshed branding is rolling out nationally across its full portfolio this month, before expanding across retail environments, marketing communications and consumer experiences.
