It’s set to be a busy 2017 for 80s pop icon Boy George. Fresh from being announced as one of the judges on Channel Nine’s The Voice, he’s just landed a gig as the face of fashion brand Dior.
And it appears the original gender bender is back in fashion having recently sold out an Australian tour with band Culture Club, an appearance on The New Celebrity Apprentice in the US and a cameo on the The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. He also judged the UK version of The Voice in 2015.
Although a man famous for dressing as a woman may appear an odd choice to front Dior’s men’s summer collection, the label’s creative director, Kris Assche, thinks otherwise.
“I really tried to translate what I think Dior Homme is right now. It’s about music, it’s about cinema, it’s about fashion…It’s about a certain memory I have of the 80s that remains very much relevant for 2017,” Van Assche told fashion industry website WWD.
“Boy George, when I was a kid, was one of the first to have this message about difference being okay; he was such a major influence on my generation. That idea of freedom and being a rebel – which he still is – is really something that has stayed with me,” he said.
