WildBear and Bursty’s documentary on BMX world champions Sam and Alise Willoughby has been acquired by Netflix and begins streaming on Netflix from Monday, 7 September.

RIDE, the feature documentary charting the extraordinary story of BMX world champions Sam and Alise Willoughby.

The launch follows the success of RUNN, the Nedd Brockmann documentary also produced by WildBear and Bursty. RUNN was acquired by Netflix Australia and New Zealand and has since become one of the streamer’s standout local sports stories, giving RIDE a proven home for its own Netflix debut.

The 85-minute documentary directed by Serge Ou, starts with Sam’s rise from the suburbs of Adelaide to a world champion and Olympic medallist, before a training accident leaves him tetraplegic and takes away everything he and Alise had known.

RIDE paints a bold picture of reinvention in the world of disability, and what makes true champions and astonishing human beings, both on and off the track.

Sam and Alise are excited to share their story with a wider audience, and hope it changes how people think about disability.

“This documentary reveals our unique story, and we hope it inspires a lot of people. We want to challenge the world’s pre-conceived views about disability and the limits it can have on an individual.” Sam Willoughby said.

“Sam and Alise’s journey is extremely special, and we’re honoured to help share it with the world. Following RUNN onto Netflix says a lot about the kind of stories we set out to tell, real people, real stakes and real impact. As a creative agency, we love that we can highlight the depth and breadth of our work, including producing incredible stories like this alongside the amazing team at Wildbear ,” James Ward, co-founder, Bursty said.

“RIDE is exactly the kind of story we exist to tell, a genuine, hard-won human story with global resonance. Following RUNN onto Netflix confirms there’s a real audience for authentic Australian sports documentaries, and we’re proud to keep building that track record with our partners Bursty,” Michael Tear, CEO, Wildbear, said.
