Macquarie University and The Daily Aus (TDA) have brought together young Australians for a TDA IRL event, exploring the science behind social connection and the role it plays in supporting mental wellbeing.

Developed in partnership with Spark Foundry Australia, the event formed part of the broader The Science Of Us content partnership between Macquarie University and The Daily Aus, designed to make social science research more accessible and relevant to Australian youth.

Shaped around the theme ‘Fill Up Your Cup’, the free morning event featured coffee and a live panel discussion covering themes of connection, belonging and wellbeing, drawing on Macquarie University research.

The panel featured The Daily Aus co-founder Sam Koslowski, ALLKND founder Milly Rose Bannister, and Dr Jessica Belcher, researcher and clinical psychologist at Macquarie University, who discussed the small everyday behaviours that can positively impact mental health.

The experience extended beyond the panel itself, with attendees invited to contribute to a Fill Up Your Cup reflection wall, connect with one another through conversation cards, and participate in a Fill Up A Cup postcard activation, encouraging them to write a note to someone who has positively impacted their lives.

“We’re proud to partner with Macquarie University and The Daily Aus on a platform that puts young people’s experiences at the heart of the conversation. At a time when many young Australians are seeking connection, confidence and a sense of belonging, this partnership enables us to deliver research backed insights in ways that feel meaningful and actionable for the audiences who need them most,” said Damien Terakes, general manager, Spark Foundry Australia for Macquarie University.

“We know young Australians face a range of significant challenges, not least when it comes to their wellbeing, mental health and sense of connection. At Macquarie University, we are committed to building community, making a difference and improving the lives of Australians,” added Elizabeth Horbach, chief marketing officer, Macquarie University.

“This partnership represents a great opportunity to connect young Australians with each other, while providing them with real-world insights and practical actions they can take in their daily lives, backed by the very best research and academic expertise. We are proud to partner with The Daily Aus and Spark Foundry Australia on this great initiative.”

“We’re more connected online than ever, yet so many of us still feel alone, which is why creating spaces for our community to gather IRL matters so much to us at TDA. This event let us do just that, bringing our audience together for conversations about connection and mental wellbeing, grounded by Macquarie University’s research in a way that felt accessible and relevant,” commented Sera Cadigan, Strategic Partnerships Manager, The Daily Aus.

“We’re grateful to have partnered with Macquarie University and Spark Foundry Australia to bring it to life, helping our community fill up their cups and walk away feeling a little more connected”.

Running across Mental Health Month in October, The Science Of Us campaign uncovers the science behind the experiences of many young people, from friendship dynamics and belonging, to changing social behaviours and mental health, backed by Macquarie University research.

It will continue across The Daily Aus’ channels through a series of social-first video explainers and accompanying The Deep Dive newsletter content, delving into key research themes through expert insights, audience data and practical takeaways.
