Fast food chain Carl’s Jr has launched a new campaign which celebrates its competitors’ low reviews by giving out free burgers, via TBWA\New Zealand.
Carl’s Jr’s 1-Star Swapper invites any Kiwi that’s ever left a one-star review at another burger chain to upload screenshotted proof online to swap their burger disappointment for a free Carl’s Jr Famous Star burger. It’s an idea rooted in a simple truth: Carl’s Jr doesn’t need to talk down their competitors. Their customers already do it for them.
The campaign cheekily spotlights their rival’s less-than-flattering reviews, turning them into real currency worth real burgers at any Carl’s Jr location nationwide. This mischievous path to drive new trial leans hard into Carl’s Jr’s trademark playfully bold, unapologetic personality.
Kiwis can head to a custom-built web app at 1starswapper.co.nz and upload a screenshot of a sad 1-star review they’ve left at another burger brand to receive a voucher for a Carl’s Jr. Famous Star.
Every successful 1-star swap also sees the swapper automatically entered into the draw to win the campaign’s most absurd grand prize: their mascot CJ’s epically cool cowboy hat. But this ain’t no everyday cowboy hat… it’s magic.
It unlocks a year of free Carl’s Jr for the winner. (Provided they’re wearing it when ordering.)
According to Shane Bradnick, chief creative officer at TBWA\New Zealand, the campaign is a perfect example of disruptive thinking in action.
“Most brands spend their time talking about why they’re better than the competition. We thought there was a far more interesting opportunity in listening to what consumers were already saying themselves. One Star Swap flips the traditional fast-food playbook on its head. Instead of competing for attention through louder claims, we’re turning real customer experiences into a reason to experience Carl’s Jr. It’s cheeky, highly participatory and exactly the kind of cultural disruption we love creating.”
The campaign builds on Carl’s Jr’s long-standing challenger mindset in New Zealand, using humour and participation rather than comparison advertising to generate conversation.
Carls Jr NZ brand director, Aimee Peterken says the idea reflects the brand’s confidence in the product. “Everyone deserves a REAL burger, and I believe there’s always room for redemption or a second chance. At Carl’s Jr, we make unapologetically great REAL burgers, and we genuinely care about customers reviews.”
“So, we wanted to extend the love and give those who have been disappointed elsewhere the opportunity to experience Carl’s Jr. That’s why we’re inviting anyone with a sad one-star burger story to our Famous Star for FREE – in a bold and of course, playful Carl’s Jr way. Hopefully, we can turn their sad one-star into a very happy one at Carl’s Jr.”
