Controversial radio host Kyle Sandilands is rumoured to be in the running for an Order of Australia medal for his COVID-19 vaccination activism.
Sandilands, who may have started the rumour himself, admitted he was hoping to snag the prestige award this year. According to The Daily Mail, Sandilands bought up the subject when he was interviewing cricket royalty, Michael Clarke, Sandilands said: “I’m hoping to get one this year (Medal of Australia)
“You know how I did the Get Vaxxed, Baby campaign? Someone said, oh, you might be up for an Order of Australia.
“And I thought, Well, I’d never get it at any other time because normally I’m the quite horrific sort of person.”‘
Sandilands may have a point. While he is usually in the news for saying something shocking, he has been heaped with praise for becoming an unlikely advocate for COVID-19 vaccinations.
Who could forget his iconic, Vax Vax Baby – a remix of Vanilla’s Ice’s Ice Ice Baby? The track featured iconic lines like “Stop, vaccinate and listen, we are back with a brand new injection.”
While it may seem a little silly, Sandilands’ messaging clearly cut through. The video has been viewed over 80,000 times and is presumably also played loudly at parties as lockdown restrictions ease.
Of course, Sandilands didn’t just release a rap to encourage Australian’s to get vaccinated. He has repeatedly encouraged Aussies to get vaccinated on his highly-rated radio show, Kyle & Jackie O.
News.com.au, reported that he also called his producer a “Stupid Prick,” for not getting vaccinated. His activism may not be traditional, but it certainly has gained traction – which is part of Sandilands charm, he doesn’t mince his words.
So perhaps the rumour will become true.
