Short film Silent Without The Sun directed by Ed de Carvalho and written by Tom Sacre, showcases what happens when there is a break in the Olympic cycle.
This powerful story is illustrated like never before – a beautiful and courageous visual experience that champions the athletes that get up before the sun and rise to the occasion.
“Having previously rowed on the Australian National Rowing Team from 2010-2015, I often think about my mates who still row and get up every day to achieve their dreams of going to an Olympics,” explained de Carvalho.
“I saw the quiet year that was 2020 as an opportunity tell a powerful story that wasn’t in focus to the wider public – athletes striving to make it to Tokyo but not knowing if it was going ahead.”
Combining an old passion with a new passion, de Carvalho was able to create a compelling piece for a sport which doesn’t usually have the visual boundaries pushed very often.
He continued, “huge challenges were working around the schedules of the national rowing squad whilst they trained through a Covid stricken time. I was lucky to have a talented and skilled crew to bring this film to life. Notably, DP Casimir Dickson’s vast experience on set and on feature films proved a key asset along with Jonny Higgins, who really added the goose bumps we were looking for with his magical mind as the composer and sound designer for the film.”
Steven Farrer, executive producer at Crater said, “this film shows the breadth of the work Ed can execute from socially brand-lead films through to short form storytelling. He knows how to build excitement and get the most out of his characters. We’ve seen Ed continually step up to the plate for our clients and on personal projects.”
Silent Without The Sun is currently doing the short film festival circuit and has picked up a handful of selections and awards. The Australian Olympic Committee, Rowing Australia, Henley Rowing Regatta, Row2K in the US and World Rowing are all pushing the film.
Channel 7 also broadcasted the film on prime-time news as part of a feature story on the Olympics and challenges Tokyo posed, with the soon-to-be released feature story from the International Olympic Committee.
