Community marketplace, Gumtree, has unveiled a new Mobile Phone Price Checker tool which displays the average prices from ads listed on the site for a range of popular smartphones.
Sara McConkey, Gumtree spokesperson said: “During last year’s launch of the iPhone 6, we saw a 203 per cent increase in iPhone listings on Gumtree. With the recent release of the iPhone 6s, we expect to see an increase again this year.”
“The Mobile Phone Price Checker will help Gumtree sellers list their mobile at a competitive price and will also help buyers find the best deal – so it’s win, win,” McConkey added.
The rise of the must-have smartphone
International research reveals mobile phones are, on average, upgraded every 18-20 months, with 56 per cent of smartphone owners generally holding onto theirs for less than a year. Locally, Gumtree data shows that Australians are cashing in on their old smartphone in order to get the latest and greatest:
- In June 2014, in-line with the Apple Watch announcement, listings for older generation iPhones increased by 439 per cent
- In August 2014 before the iPhone 6 release, older generation iPhones were selling, on average, for $200 more than at any other time of the year
- In September 2014 in-line with the iPhone 6 launch, iPhone listings on Gumtree increased by 203 per cent
The Mobile Phone Price Checker
The Mobile Phone Price checker helps buyers and sellers find the average price for a range of smartphones, based on the data from thousands of phones currently listed on Gumtree. It’s as simple as choosing a smartphone from the list and the price checker will display the average price of that phone. As well as displaying the average price, the price checker also displays the best price for a quick sale and the price which could lead to a slow sale.
