As the world watches Donald Trump become the next president of the United States, the Guardian’s mobile innovation lab will offer mobile users ways to try out new live blog features and notifications to receive the latest action of inauguration coverage.
Four features will be tested on three different platforms, as part of the lab’s experiment of telling stories on small screens.
-
Live video stream inside a notification: For the first time ever, iOS users can watch the inauguration ceremony and other key moments as they happen in a notification. Guardian will send a notification to lockscreens containing live video streams via Reuters news agency. Users will press the notification to expand the video on lockscreens. Download the Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab iOS app to use this feature and turn on notifications on the first screen to opt in.
-
Rolling live blog through notification: Keep a rolling summary on your lockscreen to catch up with the latest news of inauguration coverage. Automatic updates will be shown in the notification with highlights of recent events and what’s to come. Download the Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab iOS app or sign up on Android.
-
Read and watch video simultaneously in the live blog: Guardian readers will be able to watch live video and read at the same time. Within a mobile browser, access the inauguration live blog, then tap the live video and begin to scroll. Users will be able continue reading content, while the video minimizes to the bottom right of the screen. For this feature, follow the inauguration live blog on mobile web via Safari or Chrome.
-
See the day’s events through different lenses: Guardian mobile innovation lab’s new feature called “Shifting Lenses,” allows users to swipe left or right between two views to get the latest on what’s taking place throughout the inauguration. Shifting Lenses will be available in the iOS app.
