Converse interviewed long-term brand partner Tyler, The Creator in Sydney as part of its ‘All Star Series’ – an initiative where 30 young creatives from around the world gathered to collaborate under the mentorship of Tyler, The Creator.
In the interview, Tyler, The Creator gave his views on Australia and in particular his love for Perth:
“I was in Perth for like five days..I love it there. Don’t know how ya’ll feel about it [sic]. Don’t give a f*ck. That place is awesome. Perth is ill because… Sydney like feels like a city. But Perth is like, its city, but its super chilled”.
Dubbed ‘All Star Series’, Converse invited 30 members from their ‘All Star Community’ from around the world to collaborate under the mentorship of Tyler, The Creator.
“The ‘All Star Community’ is a global network on young creatives (called All Stars) conceived 5 years ago by Converse and their agency Magnum & Co, in which Converse gives digital and psychical commissioned work, formal mentorship opportunities and experiences to”.
The Tyler Talk in Sydney was the third instalment of Converse’s long-term partnership with Tyler, The Creator. The first of the series took place in Los Angeles and explored creative influences, while the second stop in Paris focused on the creative process.
As part of the Sydney experience, All Stars were tasked to collaborate, create and showcase new music to Tyler, The Creator.
The Musicians, visual creatives, and storytellers were selected to attend a three-day workshop, hosted by industry leaders.
During their time together, the Converse All Stars were challenged to fuse their cultural influences, musical genres, and independent styles to create five original tracks and a visual expression of the sound.
The All Stars were given the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary artist Abdul Abdullah, creative director Ken Leung and music producer Justin Elwin. The series culminated in a showcase of the work to Tyler, The Creator, who also offered insights on tackling creative roadblocks:
“If you’re a creative person, it’s easy for people to pigeonhole you,” said Tyler, The Creator. “When you branch out and do something different, even your biggest supporters might not understand as they don’t have the same lens as you. When I’m not in my comfort zone, it pushes me to break out even more. It’s easy to relapse and fall back into your old ways, but sometimes getting out of your comfort level is the greatest thing ever and that’s what this Converse All Star experience is all about.”
This Sydney moment, hosted Converse All Star, Lydia Tesema, coincides with the launch of a new colourway of Tyler’s GOLF le FLUER* 2.0 sneakers.
The All Star Series Sydney with Tyler, The Creator full-length video, tracks, visual work and audio commentary is available to listen to and view here from Friday, 9 December.
