smoothfm has announced that one of the legends of the music industry, Barry Gibb, will be joining the all-star weekend line-up from Sunday 9 October.
The Grammy award winning singer, songwriter and record producer rose to worldwide fame in 1958 after co-founding the popular music group the Bee Gees with his two brothers Maurice and Robin Gibb.
The Bee Gees have sold more than 220 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time. In 1997, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As well as writing and producing all of their own hits, the Gibb brothers created several major hits for other artists including Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross. In 1977 five of Barry’s songs simultaneously entered the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and, for one week in March, four of the top five songs were written by him.
Peter Clay, smoothfm program director said, “Securing Barry Gibb to host his own shows on smoothfm is a real coup. This man has been involved in the music industry in so many ways and I’m sure our listeners are going to love to hear his stories as much as they enjoy his music.”
In July 2016 Barry signed to Columbia Records and will release a solo album tomorrow – In the Now. This is Barry’s second ever solo album and his first album of all new material since the Bee Gees final studio album in 2001. In the Now also extends the Gibb family’s musical legacy with Barry’s two sons co-writing the 12 songs that feature on the album.
Barry said of hosting his own radio show, “I love it. I’ve never really had the opportunity and so it’s a new experience but I was inspired by the best – John Laws, Ward Austin and Bob Rogers…so all I can do is imitate them.“
Barry Gibb can be heard on smoothfm 95.3 Sydney, smoothfm 91.5 Melbourne and on smoothfm DAB+ on Sunday afternoons, 4pm to 5pm, from 9 October and throughout November.
