Australians viewed more than 16 billion minutes of broadcast content each week in the first half of 2025, with 88 per cent of people engaging with broadcast TV or BVOD monthly, according to new Virtual Australia (VOZ) data from OzTAM.

OzTAM’s new bi-annual VOZ Total TV Viewing Report highlights Australian viewing trends drawn from the VOZ Total TV currency database. It analyses the billions of minutes viewed across broadcast TV and BVOD and presents topline trends for industry use.

VOZ covers ABC, Seven, Nine, 10 and SBS, their regional affiliates and BVOD services nationally. It does not include SVOD or AVOD viewing.

The VOZ Total TV Viewing Report is based solely on Australia’s official broadcast TV and BVOD data, the industry currency for analysing free-to-air content and advertising performance.

VOZ is distinct from OzTAM’s new StreamscapeTM report, which incorporates subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) and advertising-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) viewing.

The VOZ report unveiled viewing insights from the first half of 2025 including weekly viewing minutes increasing 2.5 per cent year-on-year, and nearly nine in 10 Australians having engaged with broadcast TV or BVOD each month.

Australians watched over 16 billion minutes of broadcast content each week, with BVOD accounting for 2.2 billion minutes.

Live streaming drove a 41 per cent year-on-year lift in BVOD viewing, rising to 31.4 per cent for 16-39s (based on VOZ data only; excludes SVOD/AVOD viewing).

Australians watch more than 41 hours of VOZ Total TV each month, mostly via the TV set.

BVOD-exclusive viewing added almost 11 per cent to VOZ Total TV’s weekly reach on average, and as much as 19% incremental monthly reach for the 16-39 demographic.

Sunday remains the highest-reaching day for VOZ Total TV.

Drama drives the highest proportion of BVOD viewing, while sport accounts for around 9-10 per cent of both broadcast TV and BVOD consumption. Viewers continue to turn to broadcast TV for major news events like ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the 2025 Federal Election.

“This report showcases not only the strength and continued evolution of television as a platform, but also the depth of data available within our VOZ database. For our time-stretched industry, having key trends readily accessible from a robust and credible source is central to OzTAM’s role in supporting the market, and we look forward to delivering this report each half-year,” OzTAM CEO, Karen Halligan, said.

The VOZ Total TV Viewing Report for the period 29 December 2024 – 28 June 2025 focuses on the VOZ Total Television Landscape; How We Watch; Who is Watching and How Much; Broadcast TV and BVOD Reach; and What We’re Watching.

VOZ is Australia’s official ‘Total TV’ measurement standard, unifying broadcast TV and BVOD viewing into a single, de-duplicated, cross-platform database. It combines ratings from more than 20,000 individuals daily in 8,300 OzTAM and Regional TAM panel homes, with data from over 16 million connected devices streaming BVOD each month.
