Colony Group has acquired brand experience innovation agency Type + Pixel in a move to boost its AI capabilities and strengthen its position as Queensland’s largest independent agency.
The acquisition marks another significant milestone in Colony’s aggressive 18-month growth trajectory, strengthening its integrated model and expanding its national footprint at a time when brands are doubling down on technology-led creativity.
Type + Pixel becomes the fourth specialist brand within Colony Group’s growing portfolio, joining Creative Outpost, Orange Digital and Colony Agency. The addition boosts Colony’s ability to deliver end-to-end services spanning strategy, creative, digital, social, media and production—now layered with advanced AI and immersive brand innovation capabilities.
Known for its expertise in brand innovation and AI-driven creativity, Type + Pixel has built its reputation delivering immersive, future-focused brand experiences. Its offering spans interactive digital environments, artificial intelligence, gamification, augmented reality and disruptive creative technology solutions—areas increasingly in demand from brands seeking deeper engagement and measurable impact.
“This acquisition marks a major leap forward, turbocharging Colony Agency’s AI capabilities and empowering us to redefine what’s possible at the intersection of creativity and technology,” said Matt McCarthy.
The move adds 10 team members to Colony Group, bringing total headcount to 120, including Type + Pixel founder and director Darren Walls. Walls steps into the role of managing partner within Colony Group, continuing to service existing clients while scaling AI and brand innovation capabilities across the broader business.
“It’s an incredibly exciting time for Type + Pixel,” said Darren Walls. “We’ve built an award-winning agency brand over the last ten years, and we’re looking forward to bringing our blend of brand thinking & digital innovation to the Colony Group as it grows its national footprint.”
Experienced agency leader Sarah Deery has also been appointed general manager at Type + Pixel, in addition to her role at Creative Outpost, further expanding her leadership remit within the group.
The acquisition comes as agencies across Australia sharpen their propositions ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games—a once-in-a-generation commercial opportunity expected to drive sustained investment in brand, infrastructure and audience engagement across the region. Colony says the deal strengthens its ability to support brands and organisations across every touchpoint in the lead-up to the Games.
Over the past 18 months, Colony Group has steadily built scale and capability, positioning itself as not only Queensland’s largest independent agency but also one of the largest in the South Pacific.
The Brisbane-founded agency expanded into Sydney and Melbourne in November 2025.
