Thanks namely to streaming services, TV shows no longer play second-fiddle to their more esteemed cinema cousins. With that in mind, UK’s public broadcaster The BBC has posed the question what are the “greatest TV series of the 21st century?”
To find out, the BBC polled 206 TV experts from 43 countries and asked each one to provide a list of their top 10 favourite TV shows from the past two decades. The answers formed an ultimate top 100, which you can read in full at the bottom of this article.
American crime drama The Wire took the number one spot. The homage to 60s adland, Mad Men, came in at second spot, Breaking Bad was third, Fleabag fourth and Game of Thrones rounded out the list’s top five.
The list was dominated by American dramas and comedies with, sadly, no Aussie shows making the list.
It also caused a bit of a stir in the UK after hometown favourite Doctor Who failed to get a mention.
Commenting on the list, a BBC spokesperson said: “While in no way definitive, the answers we have collated are fascinating – and, we hope, will inspire TV lovers everywhere to both seek out titles they haven’t seen before, and further reflect on and discuss ones they have.
“In total, 460 different series were voted for by 206 TV experts – critics, journalists, academics and industry figures – who came from 43 countries, from Albania to Uruguay. Of these voters, 100 were women, 104 were men, and two were non-binary. Each voter listed their 10 favourite TV series of the 21st Century, which we scored and ranked to produce the top 100 listed below.”
