The Washington Post has laid off one third of its staff, completely eliminating its sports sections and a number of foreign bureaus, at the press of an email client send button.
Following a company-wide meeting on Wednesday, all employees received an email confirming whether or not they had lost their job in the subject line.
The emails to affected staff read:
“Important: Your Role Is Eliminated by Today’s Workforce Reductions.
“Following up on today’s communication, I’m writing to share the difficult news that your position is eliminated as part of today’s organisational changes. Please know that this decision was not made lightly and came after careful consideration of many factors, including the evolving needs of our business. We appreciate your contributions to the company.”
The lay-offs are said to have affected approximately 300 journalists, most notably all of its Middle East correspondents and journalist Lizzie Johnson, who was covering the war in Ukraine just last week.
Johnson took to X @lizziejohnsonnn when she was made aware of the layoffs: “I was just laid off by the Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I’m devastated.”

“Today’s news is painful. These are difficult actions.” said Matt Murray executive editor of The Washington Post, in a statement to the company. “The company’s structure is too rooted in a different era, when we were a dominant, local print product.”
“We can’t be everything to everyone.” he added.
Sam Fortier, staff writer at the Washington Post, was another affected by the cuts. Fortier took to X @Sam4TR posting the email he received from the Masthead with the subject line reading “Important: Your Role Is Eliminated by Today’s Workforce Reduction” followed by a 54 word email detailing his dismissal.
I am part of the mass layoffs at the Washington Post.
I am sad and angry. We all want to keep doing the work.
But for now I want to document a reality of being in journalism today. pic.twitter.com/Xzrq6HhiP7

The masthead was purchased in 2013 by Jeff Bezos from the Graham family for US$250 million (AU$357 million).
The insensitive sackings were put down to the “rapidly changing era of new technologies and evolving user habits”.
Previously considered to be a centre-left masthead, the Post has been the subject of speculation about its strategic direction given the increasingly cordial relationship between Bezos and President Donald Trump.
Bezos has remained quiet as the situation unfolds, despite repeated pleading from Washington Post staff for him to intervene. The billionaire owner offered no comment at the time of announcement.
In its own reporting of the redundancies, the Post said it had been losing subscribers in recent times, partially linked to Bezos’ decision to have the masthead tone down its endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and steer the opinion page into a more conservative direction.
