A photo of some Walmart in-store merchandising has gone viral and forced a grovelling apology from the discount behemoth.

Unfortunately, its “Own the school year like a hero” merchandising has ended up in one of its US stores’ sporting goods departments. Or, more to the point, a display case full of guns and rifles.

Admittedly, the sign is general merchandising used throughout the store, but still not a good look considering the nervousness around shootings in US schools.

The images of the guns from the Indiana store quickly made it on to social media and the reaction was swift and just.

Walmart immediately issued an apology that read: “What’s seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores. We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened.”
