To celebrate the launch of Urban List Osaka, Urban List and Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) have teamed up with six Japanese venues across Sydney and Melbourne to create Detour Dishes.

Detour Dish is a month-long venue collaboration inspired by travel’s unexpected moments. Running from 3 June to 1 July, it has invited diners to discover limited-edition menu specials that take familiar Japanese favourites in surprising new directions.

In Sydney, Ito (Surry Hills), Sakura House (Sydney CBD) and Sunset Sabi (Manly) will each serve a one-off creation. Chotto Motto (Collingwood), Robata (Melbourne CBD) and Koi Toy (Coburg) will join the line-up in Melbourne, each delivering their own unexpected twist on a konbini-inspired dish.

Drawing inspiration from Japan’s iconic convenience store culture, Urban List challenged each chef to reimagine a beloved konbini classic with an unexpected twist.

The partnership marks the launch of Urban List Osaka, a new city platform to help Australians discover the city’s best food, culture, neighbourhoods and experiences, and book with confidence.

“We’re seeing growing demand from brands that want to connect with audiences through experiences and cultural moments. Detour Dishes brings together travel, food and storytelling in a way that’s genuinely engaging for our audience, while creating meaningful integration for SCTI. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the launch of Urban List Osaka and inspire future travel through local experiences,” said Urban List co-head of sales Leilani Vakaahi.

The partnership is also inspired by the moments that make travel memorable.

“Travel has a funny way of surprising you, and the detours are usually the best part. Detour Dishes is a perfect expression of that feeling, and we’re excited to bring it to life alongside Urban List as it launches the Osaka platform. Whether you’re planning your next trip to Japan or just chasing something unexpected on a Tuesday night in Melbourne or Sydney, this one’s for you,” said Southern Cross Travel Insurance chief customer officer Jess Strange.

Urban List Osaka is now live, providing readers with curated recommendations and insider guides to one of Japan’s most exciting cities.
