Episode 18 of season 15 saw one of the most divisive cook-offs of the season, with Lol and Lil’s meals drawing both praise and criticism.
Their menu promised inspiring flavours and surprising takes, but it didn’t always land. Despite the hiccups, the Queensland duo were determined to prove they belonged in the competition.
Lol and Lil’s three-course spread began with French onion soup and Fried Chicken Bao Buns, which were followed by Rotisserie Chicken Gyros with Pickled Red Onions and Tzatziki, and Beef Bulgogi Egg Net. Dessert was a Chai Poached Pear with Salted Caramel and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, alongside a Raspberry and Chocolate Tart with Raspberry Coulis.
The early promise of the entrées gave way to rising tension as the mains hit the table. However, the mains drew criticism for uneven execution, and the duo sought redemption at dessert.
Maria doubled down as she said she and Bailey would be choosing Lol and Lil’s dishes that they could be most critical of. The teams were given two options for each course, and Maria said to the camera, “We need to be very strategic in what we choose, so we can be extra critical”.
They first picked bao buns, with Maria gushing: “They were so delicious, it was one of the best entrees that we’ve had in this competition”.
She then picked the chicken gyros, because of her own Greek heritage, and said of the dish, “It was a good Australian gyros, I’d say!” They then said Lol and Lil’s dessert, a chai poached pear, was “delicious” and “had it all” as they had nothing but praise for the duo.
However, Maria and Bailey then gave a score of just six overall, leaving Lol and Lil completely baffled.
The duo’s night was called a “rollercoaster” of highs and lows. Their total of 68 out of 100 left them clinging to their spot on the leaderboard, behind Justin and Will, who are on top with their 75 points.
