Despite production being linked to a COVID-19 outbreak, things are full steam ahead for Nine’s Love Island Australia as the network announced the first four Islanders.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, Love Island Australia is based on Love Island UK, an iconic piece of television that brought such phrases as “it is what it is” and “it’s a violation, that’s very muggy, that’s like a statement saying you’re a prick. I’m not going to let someone take me for a prick, no way” to the cultural lexicon.
A rotating cast of Islanders is sent to a delightful looking Villa: for the UK, usually in Majorica, Spain and for this season of the Oz edition, an undisclosed location in the Byron Bay area. Sadly, this does not mean that Chris Hemsworth will be making a guest appearance.
The pinnacle of heterosexual entertainment, Islanders must pair off into couples, compete in challenges and play intense games of physcological and emotional mindgames around the lauded fire pit to try and stop themselves being dumped from the Island – so a bit like Survivor, but more string bikinis.
Oh, and of course, they’re looking to fall in love too!
The show will premiere on Monday, October 11 at 8.45pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
According to Nine, “our beautiful singles are gearing up to enter the luxurious villa to find their perfect match and have the time of their lives”.
The first four Islanders to be revealed are:
Jessica, 23, ‘The intimidator’
Cronulla, NSW
“I’m not just beautiful, I’m powerful as well. I say what I want to say, and I do what I want to do.”
Rachael, 21, ‘Hot geek’
Gold Coast, QLD
“I am an old soul and a nerd at heart. I love Lego, Star Wars movies, and I love going to bookstores. I’m not someone who sleeps around and goes to bars all the time.”
Taku, 24, Rugby player
Wollongong, NSW
“I want all the smoke, if you know what I’m saying. I’m a confident guy, I bring the fun and the party. I can’t wait.”
Chris, 25, ‘Riot squad’
Gold Coast, QLD
“I do get a lot of attention when I head out, being good looking is a curse. To fall in love, that would be pretty cool. I can’t wait to get in the villa.”
Nine said: “The all-new Islanders must couple up, stay together, and win over the hearts of the voting public, all while surviving the temptations of beautiful bombshells regularly entering the villa to test their relationships.”
