Super Bowl Broadcaster Blows A Cool $US5 Million As TV Screens Go Blank

The Super Bowl, of course, is probably more famous for its ads than it is the actual football. Check out the pick of them from yesterday’s game here.

That’s primarily due to the huge cost of airing a spot to the game’s 100 million-plus TV audience. A typical 30-second TVC can reportedly cost a brand in the vicinity of $US5 million ($A6.3 million).

But for 26 excruciating seconds during yesterday’s game, TVs around the country went blank due to a technical glitch by the broadcaster, NBC.

The blackout came after the Patriots kicked a second-quarter field goal. NBC went to a commercial break but instead switched to almost half-a-minute of darkness. It appears, the network will have to wear the $US5 million loss although a spokesperson later said that “no game or commercial time” were lost in the interruption.

And, yes, TV viewers were quick to make fun of the broadcaster’s mishap via social media.

“This is the best ad yet,” the Washington Post’s Philip Bump tweeted.

Josh Greenman of the New York Daily News asked, “Was there really a commercial for anticommercialism?”

Even the brands themselves had some fun. Seizing the opportunity, washing powder brand Tide continued its theme of being in every part of the Super Bowl tonight by tweeting that the nearly 30 second blackout could be a Tide ad.
