[B&T warns this article contains language and themes some readers may find offensive.] Not everyone’s been sad to see the passing of Her Majesty – the Irish and republicans in the UK top of the bunch.

That was evident when fans of the Scottish football club Celtic unveiled a banner at a game last Wednesday that read “Fuck the Crown!” The sport’s governing body, UEFA, is now investigating the incident.

One media commentator infuriated by the banner was conservative radio announcer James Whale who lashed Celtic fans on a recent show.

So when a Scottish chap called “Tony” phoned Whale’s program to defend the fans’ actions, the 71-year-old was having absolutely none of it.

Caller Tony asked Whale: “Why is [the Queen dying] so important to you?  Why are you so self-serving to someone you don’t even know?”

Whale then dialled down the caller and snapped back: “[Do] I have to explain this to you?” he said aggressively.

“It [the Monarchy] is a very important part of my life. The Queen has been on the throne for my entire life. Which is long, much longer than yours, I imagine. And now that has finished and we embark on a new era.”

It’s here that Whale got really hot. “Sod off. Go away. Don’t call me again. I can’t stand you. You disgust me. Does that make it plain enough for you?

Whale later called the anti-monarchy Celtic fans “low life scumbags from Scotland.”

As this things do, video of the call soon made its way onto social media with may people unhappy the way Whale responded.

“Can’t handle an opinion,” one person tweeted.

Another added: “What kinda talk show is it when people are only allowed to agree with the host or they’ll throw a fit.”

While others applauded the announcer’s stance.

“Me having a conversation with any republican,” another man tweeted.
