The producers of a popular BBC documentary narrated by legendary wildlife commentator David Attenborough have been called out by viewers for including misleading footage.
Blue Planet II features a segment claiming that thousands of plastic toys were still being found across the world’s oceans after a storm hit a ship in 1992 and knocked them overboard.
The show’s producers planted ducks in the ocean to replicate the incident, but viewers were quick to label the footage misleading, claiming they weren’t made aware the ducks were in fact not from the 1992 shipwreck.
i’m not being funny #blueplanet you can’t tell me you didn’t put those rubber ducks in the sea yourself, deffo not buying that one

did your film crew throw a load of plastic ducks into the ocean earlier in the programme to demonstrate currents? Were they all recovered? #BluePlanet2 https://t.co/cJd5oyk8iA

Another viewer tweeted: “So whose job was it to follow the yellow ducks around for 15 years then?”
BBC filmmaker Sarah Conner later revealed on Twitter that the ducks were planted, before directing outraged viewers to a blog post by the show’s producer, John Ruthven, about how the segment was put together.
