He may have won the top gong at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) over the weekend, but that didn’t stop Kyle Sandilands from laying into the event.
Sandilands and his KIIS FM 106.5 breakfast show co-host Jackie “O” Henderson won the Best On-Air Team (Metro FM) category at the 30th annual ACRAs on Saturday night in Melbourne – the fifth time they have won the award, with the last occasion being in 2015.
That also happens to be the last time Sandilands and Henderson attended the ACRAs, with the duo a no show once again this year.
Unsurprisingly, Sandilands’ absence – which has also been an issue in recent weeks regarding his regular on-air duties – was pointed out via a bevvy of gags from ACRAs hosts Andrew Hansen and Chris Taylor.
Even KIIS FM’s Melbourne equivalent of Kyle & Jackie O, Jase Hawkins and PJ Harding, joined in by wheeling out a fake Sandilands on a hospital bed complete with an oxygen mask.
When quizzed about their awards absence by KIIS newsreader Brooklyn Ross on-air this morning, Sandilands said he “couldn’t be arsed” attending.
“It’s a piece of sh*t event – that’s why I never go,” he said.
“It’s one of the world’s most boring events. It’s the most boring, long, drawn-out, ‘Yes, I know I’m going to win…’”
Meanwhile, Henderson said she “wasn’t ever going” to this year’s ACRAs.
Commercial Radio Australia, who puts on the industry awards, declined to comment on Sandilands’ on-air put-down when approached by B&T.
