Perrottet’s Cabinet Reshuffle Opens Up New Research And Development Opportunities

As part of a raft of changes brought on by Dominic Perrottet’s cabinet reshuffle in December 2021, Alister Henskens has become the new Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology and Leader of the House.

Henskens appointment comes as Perrottet (Pictured above) emphasised plans to turn NSW into a leading technology, research and development economy.

The role of Science, Innovation and Technology Minister is a new title which closest resembles the Minister for Information Technology position which ceased to exist in 1999.

As reported on by InnovationAus, Henskens has spent his first month meeting with the Government’s chief scientist and some of the state’s world-leading quantum and medical university research hubs.

In his first interview since taking the role, Henskens told InnovationAus, “15 years ago, people invested in quantum computing here in Sydney.”

“It’s now just got the greatest critical mass of research in the whole world.”

Speaking more on his portfolio, he said, it’s “about having an eye on that long term strategic investments in important areas in the next technologies that will reap the industries of the future, and the jobs of the future for our state.”

He added there obviously isn’t going to be an economy where we will have a big coal mining industry.

Henskens also outlined he believed there was a role for a state government collaboration in places like the Western Sydney Aerotropolis or Sydney’s Tech Central.

Tech Central

Tech Central will be a future focal point of Sydney’s innovation and technology community right in the heart of the CBD.

It’s hoped it will help NSW become a global leader in fintech, cyber, e-health and creative industries.

A sign that momentum in the precinct is growing, tech titan Atlassian has won approval to build a $1billion dollar tower in the hub.
