Viewers of dowdy arts program Antiques Roadshow copped more than they bargained for after it was revealed a presenter had mistakenly drunk human urine during a segment.
Presenter Andy McConnell was valuing a bottle believed to be 180 years old which he assumed contained some sort of “port or red wine”. McConnell syringed some of the liquid from the bottle and promptly drank it.
In a follow-up segment over the weekend, it was revealed the contents of the bottle had been sent for scientific testing.
Discussing the results of an X-ray on the bottle, host Fiona Bruce revealed: ‘Now you thought it was port or wine. That would have been nice! In actual fact, inside were these brass pins, all of these dating from the late 1840s. Then the liquid… urine!’
McConnell responded: “Yummy – such good news!”
Bruce revealed the bottle also contained a cockle, human hair and some alcohol.
Apparently the concoction was common in Georgian times to ward off witches and curses and was often buried under a person’s house.
