it could be argued the Nine network missed the food reality genre by a good decade, preferring to hang its reality hat on home renovation.
However, the broadcaster’s set for another tilt at the food game (and the lucrative ad pool) in its latest attempt to take on Seven’s MKR and Ten’s MasterChef, today calling for contestants for its new show Family Food Fight to air towards the end of 2017.
In 2016 Nine dabbled in the food genre with Hot Plate, a ratings disaster hosted by Tom Parker Bowles (son of Camilla, wife of Prince Charles).
Sadly, Hot Plate never resonated with viewers, but it did resonate with arch-rival Seven’s lawyers who claimed the show was a direct rip-off of MKR and took Nine to court over intellectual copyright. The two eventually agreed to a “mutually agreed settlement” that meant Nine had to to can the show and never run repeats.
The network revealed some details of Family Food Fight at its upfronts back in November last year, describing the concept as “pitting family members members against one another to find Australia’s greatest food family”.
Family Food Fight is to be produced by Endemol Shine (the same people behind Nine’s Married At First Sight) and a call for contestants asked: “Do you love cooking delicious family recipes that have been passed down from one generation to the next? Do you or your extended family relish in cooking together then coming together for a lavish feast Do you believe that your family is Australia’s Greatest Food Family?”
Thinking of entering? Well, you need to have four family members and none of you are to have had any professional cooking experience.
Producers are also looking for “family values, enthusiasm, passion, love of family and sharing food, desire to entertain.” So, basically, if you can’t cook and don’t particularly like your family it sounds like you’d be the perfect fit.
