Kyle Sandilands has revealed why he never got the axe, despite doing whatever he wants.
Over the weekend, Sandilands and his partner in crime Jackie O were honoured by being inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame.
While accepting this honour at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, Sandilands got real about why he has stayed on the air throughout his many controversies. Particularly in the early days, when he didn’t have two decades of gold ratings to back him up.
Interestingly, Sandilands admitted it because of his former boss Jeff Allis. Allis famously brought Sandilands from regional radio to the metro market.
News.com.au reported that he said: “No one knows when Jeff Allis hired me. He said to me, ‘There’s a lot of people here that are really good at their job, and there’s a lot of 9-5 people just punching their time card.
“And he said, ‘between you and I, just fu**ing do anything you want, and I will be your get out of jail free card!’
“So I took full advantage, as many of you would be aware. A lot of management was like, ‘how the f**k did he not get fired 4000 times? Jeff Allis saved me every time.”
Allis famously left his radio career to co-found the successful juice chain Boost. However, when he was at the helm, he was famous for his cutthroat approach to radio. If you didn’t rate, you didn’t stay.
He also famously gave Hamish & Andy their big break and I guess always had a soft spot for Sandilands.
