As the world turns its focus on Argentinian superstar Messi for this Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain, Google has partnered with Pelé Brand to recreate his finest solo effort that was not captured on TV.
‘The Most Beautiful Goal Never Seen’ is a mini-documentary that uses Google DeepMind technology to reconstruct Pelé’s 1959 ‘Gol da Rua Javari’ in a Brzilian leage game between Santons and Juventus at the Rua Javari stadium.
The documentary draws on testimony from Pelé’s family, historians and eyewitnesses, using tools including Veo 3 and Gemini Omni.
Brazilian historian Anita Lucchesi and her team spent months gathering nearly 2,000 historical records—blueprints, family albums, newspaper diagrams—and over 3,600 archival images, using a scale model of the old stadium to help eyewitnesses reconstruct the goal from memory.
That research became the foundation for three technical experiments.
Character replacement: mapping Pelé’s likeness and his number 10 kit onto a modern stunt player, built on Performance Control, a Veo-based approach that extracts precise 3D motion and geometry from live footage to drive generation.
Environment restyling: rebuilding the modern Rua Javari stadium to match the architecture, light and weather of that specific August day.
Ambiance generation: recreating how it felt to be there: fans packed into the stands, families gathered around the radio.
Live-action was shot first on the original pitch with period-accurate kits and a heavy leather ball. That footage was layered, isolated and rebuilt through the models, then finished through a traditional VFX pipeline: ball compositing, grain, colour, and run through a filmout process to recover the texture of 1950s film. SGx’s filmmaking skills helped deliver a cinematic view of Pele’s beautiful game.
The documentary turns fragmented memories into moving imagery intended to preserve an important piece of Pelé’s legacy. The footage of the goal, which starts around 7 minutes and 20 seconds into the video, looks a bit more like a football video game than real life, and apparently ‘real life’ really was black and white back in those days.
Nonetheless, it’s a special recreation of just how good Pelé, arguably the greatest footballer in history, really was.
Over to you, Lionel Messi.
