Fairfax Launches Virtual Cricket Game For Cricket World Cup

Fairfax Media has launched the ‘World’s Best Fielder’ – a virtual gaming extension of its digital coverage of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The game takes readers to the heart of the live tournament action, challenging them to compete against the best cricket players in the world.

Connecting readers across several Fairfax Media digital mastheads – smh.com.au, theage.com.au, BrisbaneTimes.com.au and WAtoday.com.au – throughout the six week competition, the innovative World’s Best Fielder gaming application uses real time statistics as players at home take on the game’s best, vying for the World’s Best Fielder crown and a $5,000 Visa gift card.

The World’s Best Fielder transports cricket fans inside the live Cricket World Cup competition – taking advantage of sports fans’ competitiveness and passion as they challenge the world’s best players.

“Australia and New Zealand hosting the Cricket World Cup 2015 provides a great opportunity to promote our comprehensive sports coverage with our readers,” Fairfax Media director of news and business media Sean Aylmer said.

“With a large percentage of cricket fans multi-screening during the broadcast, World’s Best Fielder is the perfect way to put our readers in the middle of the live matches. The game is played in real time so it’s a great way for cricket lovers to feel they are part of the game.”

The World’s Best Fielder virtual gaming app is housed under the cricket section in Sport, via an iframe, and is accessible via desktop and mobile. Aiming to stop as many runs as possible, players at home position themselves on the virtual field – updating their position every 15 minutes during play. If the ball hits the player’s fielding position, they stop the runs. The player at home with the highest average score at the end of the tournament will be crowned as the World’s Best Fielder and takes home a $5,000 Visa gift card.

Players can challenge their friends to play and share their scores post match by signing into Facebook and Twitter.

The World’s Greatest Fielder competition was developed by With Collective and will run throughout the Cricket World Cup 2015 tournament.
