Social media behemoth has just hit another extraordinary milestone – it now boasts two billion people around planet as users. Or just shy of 30 per cent of all humans on the planet!

And far from being subtle about the momentous achievement, Mark Zuckerberg has used the milestone to suggest that, with interest in traditional religions fading (Monday’s Census revealed 30 per cent of Aussie are now atheists) his invention could take over from churches and offer users a sense of community.

Following the news of the two billion mark being reached, Zuckerberg posted that Facebook’s new mission was to “give power to build community and bring the world closer together”.

In a recent speech, Zuckerberg said: “As I’ve travelled around, one theme is clear: every great community has great leaders. A church doesn’t just come together. It has a pastor who cares for the well-being of their congregation. Leaders set the culture, inspire us, give us a safety net, and look out for us.”

However, as many people have pointed out, two billion people may use Facebook, but with the world’s population hovering around the seven billion-mark, some five billion people don’t! It’s estimated that 87 per cent of every person on the planet has some sort of faith, meaning Mr Zuckerberg’s calculations are a little of the mark just yet!
