We all want to see more diverse and inclusive characters on our TV screens and UK dating show Blind Date should be applauded for its first-ever bisexual line-up on Sunday night’s episode.
The long-running dating show on UK’s Channel Five saw beautician Jordan Shannon (left in photo below) choose male model Jesse Drew (right) from three other contestants.
The pair appeared instantly enamoured with one another when the screened rolled back and became even more excited with the news they’d be jetting-off to the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia as their prize for a spot of sun, surf and (presumably) sex!
Only problem was, same-sex activity is illegal for men in sunny Saint Lucia and carries 10 years in prison and an unidentified fine.
Interestingly, lesbianism is allowed on the Caribbean island, however, sex between men is punishable under the country’s “buggery and gross indecency laws”.
Blind Date is pre-taped and the duo later revealed they were unaware of the laws until they arrived on the island.
“I didn’t know this until I was told on the way to the hotel. I thought: ‘What the fuck?’” Shannon told the UK’s Daily Star.
Drew said: “The hotel security woman told me how most gay men were in the closet there as homosexuality is illegal. It’s 10 years in prison if caught.”
Thankfully, the pair managed to get through their adventure without being arrested and have since returned safely to the UK. It’s unclear if their love blossomed despite the obvious stresses.
A Blind Date spokesperson added: “We didn’t know and are taking this up with the production company.”
B&T is a staunch supporter of diversity and inclusion via our Change The Ratio conference. It’s on 30th May in Sydney and you can check out all the details here.
