Cotton On has announced its first-ever athlete sponsorship, and it’s Thanasi Kokkinakis, yes the man that went viral for wearing Cotton On shorts while winning the Australian Open.
Organic marketing moments like this are hard to come by these days, but last year Kokkinaksi went viral for sporting $40 Cotton On shorts while winning the Australian Open. Which then led to everyone praising him for being a budget king.
Usually, athletes tend to wear branded content from big sportswear brands like Adidas and Nike but not Kokkinakis.

Now, Cotton On has smartly signed the athlete on and honestly, what a clever marketing move! It’s clear the tennis player is a fan.

Cotton On wrote on Instagram, “Watch out, Wimbledon 👀 We’re so pumped to get behind homegrown tennis star, Thanasi Kokkinakis, as an official sponsor 💪🎾 Catch his kit in action through the tournament and get around him!”
Kokkinakis wrote on his own Instagram, “Active tech shorts doing plenty👀
Pumped to be joining the @cottonon fam🤝,”
This is the kind of marketing moment CMOs can only dream of.
