“Better Than Space!” Iceland’s Other-Worldly Landscapes The Star Of Latest Tourism Campaign

Fresh from a recent trip to Iceland ourselves, B&T can suitably attest to the country’s stunning, raw and other-worldly landscapes.

And that’s the very theme of a new tourism ad for the nation that basically argues why travel to outer space when the lunar-esque landscapes of Iceland are far prettier and easier to access anyway.

Called “Mission: Iceland”, the ad’s the work of New York agency SS+K, who were also behind the country’s notorious campaign from last November that roasted Mark Zuckerberg. Re-live that HERE.

Apparently the creative is based on research by Iceland’s tourism board, Visit Iceland, that found 40 per cent of people believed Iceland’s landscapes are superior to what they’d experience on other planets. While 60 per cent believed the landscape of Mars will have red rocks (60 per cent), volcanoes (21 per cent) and black sand (15 per cent) – all of which can be found in Iceland.

More interestingly, as part of the campaign, Visit Iceland is reportedly sending a billboard into space in the hope it may attract aliens to visit the country. Although, this appears more PR pipedream than actual reality.

Check out the new work below. And watch for a cameo around the 1:12 by the Mark Zuckerberg lookalike that the brand seems to obsess over.

Commenting on the work, Visit Iceland’s Sigríður Dögg Guðmundsdótti said: “Our message is simple: you don’t need to leave Earth to have an experience that is out of this world. There are otherworldly adventures to be found right here in Iceland, where you can enjoy the same lunar landscapes that NASA astronauts used as a training ground before the inaugural spacewalk.”

SS+K ECD Stevie Archer added: “To work on a continuous journey with Visit Iceland has been an incredible experience. Their appreciation for humor allowed us to hone our satirical muscle in various ways for each specific campaign. We get to rib current culture, by poking fun at space tourism, and having a point of view on current trends happening in the world opens up our creativity in so many ways.”
