Barbie Is Bisexual? Apparently, According To Twitter

Barbie has been Rapunzel, Cinderella, a mermaid—and even one of the three musketeers. And now, finally, the fashion doll has joined the LGBTQI+ community.

That’s at least what Twitter seems to believe, after a viral tweet emerged about Mattel giving Barbie a girlfriend. The tweet showed her alongside her girlfriend, with both wearing shirts with the slogan ‘love wins’.

However, Junkee reporter Merryana Salem discovered that the photo was the result of a 2017 collaboration between Mattel and blogger and designer Aimee Song. Song claims she is the ‘girlfriend’ in the promotional image. Barbie is said to be in the photo as an ally.

https://twitter.com/AIMEESONG/status/1348856078096691200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1348856078096691200%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fjunkee.com%2Fbarbie-gay-bisexual%2F285262

This didn’t stop Twitter from taking the re-emergence of the photo as a sign that Barbie has officially come out, with fans referring to her haircut in the photo and the portrayal of her female friendships as evidence.

In addition, while some referred to Barbie as a lesbian, many pointed out that she is, in fact, bisexual given her fondness for Ken (duh).

Could this be the start of a push for Barbie and Mattel to officially have the fashion doll join the LGBTQI+ community? We have our fingers and toes crossed at B&T.

B&T has contacted Mattel for comment.
