ABC Refuses To Sack TV Host Over “Disrespectful” Anzac Day Comments
The ABC has once again stood by controversial TV presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied, after she was accused of disrespecting Anzac Day with a post on her Facebook page.
Abdel-Magied, who hosts the ABC’s Australia Wide program, wrote “Lest We Forget (Manus.Nauru. Syria. Palestine)”, suggesting that Aussies should also spare a thought for those on Manus Island on Anzac Day.
The post ignited a swarm of criticism and calls for her to be sacked by the ABC.
Liberal senator Eric Abetz was one of those who took issue with Abdel-Magied’s Facebook post, lebelling it “unfortunate”, “disrespectful” and “deeply reprehensible”.
Abdel-Magied was forced to delete the Facebook post, and issued the following shortly after.
She then commented on the post, saying “It was brought to my attention that my last post was disrespectful, and for that, I apologise unreservedly.
An ABC spokesman told Fairfax that it would stand by Abdel-Magied, arguing that her personal opinions don’t not represent those of the national broadcaster.
“Ms Abdel-Magied is a part-time presenter on the ABC program Australia Wide, introducing stories done by ABC reporters from around the country,” he said.
“When presenting for the ABC, she works in accordance with ABC editorial and other policies.
“Ms Abdel-Magied is also engaged in a range of other activities and work that is not related to the ABC. Her views and opinions in that capacity are her own and do not represent those of the ABC.”
This is not the first time Abdel-Magied has drawn criticism for voicing her opinions, having caused a stir with her pro-Sharia law comments on the ABC’s Q&A in February.
